We all love animals! (Well, most people do at least). How do pets relate to your home insurance? Many people don’t realize that the Personal Liability coverage under your home insurance policy usually extends coverage to your pets too! This means that if your pet hurts or bites someone or even damages property, your home insurance policy may pay for the damages. Some home insurance policies automatically include Animal Liability under Personal Liability, but some policies require a separate endorsement to provide coverage for Animal Liability. If you are concerned about if your policy contains this coverage, reach out to your agent or carrier for additional information.
As agents, one of the questions we always have to go over is “do you have any dogs? If yes, what breed?” Sometimes we’ll hear the response “why does that matter?” or “why does my insurance carrier need to know that?” Most consumers don’t know that carriers have a list of restricted dog breeds. These lists typically include many of the same breeds such as Pit Bulls, American Staffordshire Terrier, Rottweilers, Akitas, Doberman Pinschers, Chow Chows, Mastiffs, Alaskan Malamute, and Wolf Hybrids just to name a few but these lists also vary from carrier to carrier. Carriers have these lists because statistically, these dog breeds are more likely to cause harm or result in damage. Sometimes, if you have one of these breeds, a carrier will simply decline to write your home insurance altogether and sometimes a carrier will still offer coverage for your home but will exclude liability coverage for your animals.
We also must ask the question “has your dog ever bitten anyone?” If the answer is yes, unfortunately most insurance carriers will not offer coverage on either your home and/or animals. The good news is that another advantage of being with an independent agency is that we have a multitude of options to try to find a place for both your home and your animal!
